Lundin
Roofing Company is committed to providing a safe working environment
for all employees. To reach this goal, management is diligent in
making sure that all our employees are properly equipped and receive
the most current training. Our compensation program includes a 'safety
bonus' program to reward our employees for safety on the job. These
safety oriented measures are working.
When Lundin
Roofing Company implemented this new safety program in 1989, our
workman's compensation experience modifier was 1.9. Within two years
the experience modifier for Lundin Roofing Company dropped below
1.0 and since 1991 has stayed below .87. The experience modifier
for 1997 and 1998 was .75, which has allowed Lundin Roofing to offer
better pricing and service to its customers.
For Lundin
Roofing Company, safety equipment and procedures are built into
every job. For the safety of our employees and the security of our
customer's property, Lundin Roofing Company commits sufficient resources
on every job to ensure that job safety is a fundamental principle
on every job bid. Unless 'safety comes first,' Lundin Roofing Company
doesn't do the job.
Lundin
Roofing uses a pro-active approach to safety training that provides
constant reinforcement for the proper use of safety equipment and
safety practices/procedures in the field.
- Lundin
Roofing subscribes to the National Roofing Contractors Association's
(www.roofonline.org)
"Toolbox Talks" program. This program gives our crew foremen a
weekly safety topic for training, along with illustrated examples
for working demonstrations with each crew, plus a tracking procedure
to ensure that each employee attended the training and fully understood
the topic. These topics are specific to the roofing trade and
cover subjects as elementary as the proper use of a ladder to
high-level fall prevention for commercial and industrial applications.
- Quarterly
safety meetings for every employee of Lundin Roofing are conducted
at the main office. Attendance at these safety meetings is mandatory
and ensures that management reinforces to every employee that
Lundin Roofing is committed to safety.
- Another
part of our safety program is formal classroom training. All employees
are required to pass the Generic Safety & Health Orientation (GSHO)
training that is administered by The Safety Council of the Louisiana
Capital Area. For continued safety training, every year all employees
are required to attend a four-hour refresher course.
Additionally,
many of Lundin Roofing Company's clients have their own safety orientation
programs that are mandatory prior to our employees being able to
work in their plants. Although these safety programs are usually
specific to the individual plants where our employees are working,
the information is invaluable and is a further augmentation of correct
safety procedures.
Safe equipment and good training is of little use if the employees
are not motivated to be safe on the job. Our motivation plan is
quite simple, good safety procedures are rewarded and improper behavior
is not tolerated.
- Lundin
Roofing's Safety Incentive Program provides extra pay for each
calendar quarter that has no OSHA reportable injuries and/or accidents.
In addition to this quarterly extra pay program, if Lundin Roofing
has had no reportable injuries and/or accidents for the entire
year, each employee is given an added pay bonus. Through this
program our employees learn that 'safety pays', both for the company
and themselves.
- Conversely,
Lundin Roofing does not tolerate a lackadaisical attitude towards
safety and demands strict adherence to its safety, alcohol and
drug abuse programs. Even minor violations are dealt with immediately
and can lead to suspension or discharge if not corrected.
